Carbondale

The most stress thing in Carbondale is the weather. I remember it was very cold when i first got here in March. Sometimes it turns very warm, so that I can put on thin clothes. But after several days it turns very cold suddenly. It is very different from China, I cannot stand it. And now, it is too hot and wet outside, but in the CESL office it is so cold that I need a cardigan or coat with me every day. I don't like wet weather because when I walk outside at night, my body turns wet, and makes me feel uncomfortable. It is always terrible to breathe hot and wet weather first when I go outside. I hate tornados every May each year, and Carbondale doesn't offer electricity for us. It's terrible to live in Carbondale without all electronic things.

Conert

As the ever lasting theme in human history. Music has played an indispensable part in human history. I like music very much, and the music is to me as perfume is to the flowers. In fact, i like the rock music best. i always can get the energy from the rock music. I will become excited after i hear the rock music. Fantastic music like blood fills of my body. When i hear the rock songs, i often dream that i am a famous singer. Rock music is the source of the wisdom. It is the corner stone of my life development. It is the backbone of my confidence. My life without rock music is as the world without sun. The rock gives me the feeling that the best is still ahead.

The Dangers of Playing Violent Video Game

We all actually know how harmful violent video games are. violent video games are realy dangerous and they have negative effects. Many murderers and killers were violent video players. The government must make selling violent video games prohibited. That will actually help us to protect out children specifically and raise them in a real way. However, we should encourage them to do other activities such as sport games. Also, all teachers and parents must teach children not to hurt any one with any kind of weapon. Finally, our children are our responsibility; we should take care of them because they are society's future.

Summary:

When Natasha Stele who comes from Australia, want to spread herself and foreign culture while she is in Japan. But her work place which names Nova was collapsed. So she lost her job and worry about her life. For many foreigners, to teach English in Japan is really traditional. But the Nova’s situation got worth so it is hard to get job for foreigners. The Nova which famous English chain was established by Nozomu Sahashi in 1981when he finished his study in Paris. After later, in April 2005, things was changed by many bad incidents. The students accused the school and pay back their tuition. The government lead to suspension of Nova, which suffered ,any students and their tuition. A pink bunny rabbit became famous so some air plane company help the teacher. Nova employees announced “lessons for food” program which teach for the students about the food. Nevertheless, Nova’s nightmare didn’t finish at all. Lawyers seek for bad things. Sahashi did insider trading and embezzlement and so on. After all, Nova can’t find the sponsor, it face insolvency. Finally, this incident will involve foreigner will involve with foreign languages and society. Then educational system said that foreigners need to take the proficiency test which is based on US educational.

Reaction:

I know this incident but I’m not sure about it. In Japan, this was really bad incident for many Japanese students. They had to seek for Nova to pay back their tuition. Also one of my friend was damaged this problem. She learned in Nova and also she paid her tuition before Nova would collapse. In her case, she could get her tuition but most of the people couldn’t get their money. Many foreigners lost their job and worry about their life in Japan. I also learned English from foreigner but not same school. I thought that was terrible problem. If my teacher would be this situation and he lost his job, what should I do? I thought. For foreigner, to get the job in Japan is not easy way. And also to get regular job is more hard in Japan. If many foreigner are interested in Japan, culture, and languages, I would be happy. Although this incident lost foreigners wish, I hope that many foreigners like Japan and other things. I hope many foreigners don’t be regret this.

In Horyn, Cathy’s article” Let’s Do Things Differently,” she points out that fashion will not be changed, but some fashion of details are changed by designer and customer now. First of all, Customers can’t stop their shopping of desire, so they buy the producer and return it because they don’t want to spend money. However, fashion stores need to think how to sell producers in economies of social which are going down. Moreover, fashion should decide that how to reduce the advertisement fee to get useful advertisements. Finally, author states that designers must to be strong determination to devise producers that ordinary customers want. In summary, customers can influence fashion because of their consumption in fashion stores.

Reaction:

Fashion looks like very pretty, but fashion has some potential problems. For example, everyone thinks fashion stores can earn much money, but it’s not true because it spends a lot of cost for making advertisements, hiring models and designers. Moreover, sometimes fashion stores should offer their producers to some fashion shows or celebrities. However, I tell myself if I had opportunities to relate fashion, I would know what the fashion is first because fashion has to care design more. Actually, I will study fashion design in S.I.U.C after I graduate C.E.S.L. Also, I read some news and articles which are related by fashion; therefore, I afraid of fashion now. There are too many potential problems that I can’t figure out. For example, fashion can’t provide whatever they want to show because they need to follow customer habits. Although, I knew that I still want to try to create my own brand and stores, I also have to consider that how to attract customers buying my producers. In summary, fashion is not very sublime. Even though, fashion attracts any people to pay money for getting clothes, it still has some problems about the cost. We only one thing you can believe that fashion’s stuff will be popular forever.

Chinese Hackers Infiltrate U.S. Air Force Striker Jet Program-LE

Chinese Hackers Infiltrate U.S. Air Force Striker Jet Program

Summary:

Suman Srinivasan’s article entitled “Chinese Hackers Infiltrate U.S. Air Force Striker Jet Program” discusses as a result of the invasion of hackers, to prevent further confusion senior U.S. government decided to develop a network security system to protect the government and the private network security. The Wall Street Journal points out that China is suspected of hacking into computer systems of the United States. These included the Joint Strike Fighter program, whose partners were Israel and a few other European countries and F-35 Lightning II fighter jet plan. The hackers infiltrated the data which related to design and electronics systems to copy and steal. The Obama administration has done something to change the situation, such as expand the $17 billion program for cyber-security. However, they also worried about the security of the network system.

Reaction:

Hackers, infiltrating the system were the problem since the computer appeared. With the development of computer technology hacker’s skills have become stronger and stronger. More and more people can use computers with serious technology. For instance, all the people have blogs. We can change the theme by ourselves. It has a choice: edit as Html. We can use the program language to change the background, colors, music, and everything that you want to edit. If it is 5 years ago, this technology just would be used by computer staffs. There are a large number of talented people who are so young and so creative all over the world. I heard news: a boy, 11 years old, used his pc to infiltrate the system of the China Bank. Certainly, he was taken to juvenile prison. After that, a lot of computer companies invited him. This is the power of knowledge. :)

Summary

According to Linda Toll in her article, "Music therapy as stroke therapy," music therapy has a good effect on stroke patients. First, music connects with the brain, so it is especially good for stroke patients. For this reason, music therapy allow them to get better feeling and to adapt themselves to the social circumstance. Moreover, recently it shows that music therapy is getting better united with traditional therapy to stroke patients. Nonetheless, some scientists say that music therapy and people's emotion can't connect with each other exactly. However, some people agree with music therapy's ability through their experiments including Nayak. In conclusion, music therapy has wonderful influence on patients, especially brain problem patient.

Reaction

When I was in university, I made a presentation about prenatal music. Actually, after I gave the presentation, I thought about my future job. My father is a pastor. His focus is old people. Therefore, I wanted to help his work, so I wanted to be a music therapist. At that time, when I said my opinion, he respected my opinion. However, he said that "you can also help me by piano performance." For this reason, I have been studying here. After I finish CESL, I want to study my major at SIU. In addition, after I finish at SIU, I want to help my father's work by piano performance and music therapy. In conclusion, I didn't know the musical benefits exactly. However, after I read this article, I know about music therapy's importance. I think that music is the best present from God! I love my major!

Summary

According to the author, she states that if you use computer a long time, you must feel tired and get some physical problems such as low back pain, horrible pain, and so on. Ergonomic problems, which include Carpal tunnel syndrome and aching back, have been increasingly common in modern society; however, nobody has noticed what the causes are. First, in general we don't think that we have any physical problems in our bodies, but routine position and routine life undermine our bodies, especially computer work. On the other hand, we have solutions to ease this pain.According to the article, treatment is very simple. The author suggests we should do proper exercise, take some medicine and keep god posture. In addition, sometimes we need physical therapy, which can provide stretching, evaluation and correct exercises for our problems. If we do this constantly, we will be fine. In conclusion, money is important, but you can't do anything without your health.

Reaction

In present-day life, computer is one of the necessities of life. Moreover, we can do anything through internet. On the other hand, computer often causes some physical disease. It is clear current research reports many articles about computer pain. I'm interested in these diseases, because physical therapists have been active in this field recently. That is why I chose this article. I think physical therapy deeply relates to problems, which are caused by modern society.Next, I want to talk about computer pain as well. In my opinion, approximately most people have the problem of computer pain in their life, because computer has been widespread all over the world. Computer pain is a serious problem, but nobody is aware of it. I think it is a more serious problem than computer pain itself. I want to say something as a physical therapist. If people can become aware of this problem, they can treat it by themselves. Then, they must remove the pain finally. Proper exercise gives us a good body and reduces stress, but if you don't pay close attention to your body, your computer pain will never recover I think. It will be chronic pain. I have to protect people from these diseases of modern society as a physical therapist.

Why discrete Math Is Important

1. Reference:

David, P. (2004). Why discrete Math Is Important. Retrieve 2005, from CESL

2. Summary:
In P. David’s article ”Why Discrete Math Is Important, ” he states that discrete math has been considered the most important approach of mathematics science a few years ago. In the past, discrete math got a little less attention in math curricula of secondary and high schools than other approaches because advanced examinations in schools and tests to enter college didn't depend on them. In contrast, he points out that discrete math has become more and more significant because there are some causes. First, discrete math is necessary to succeed in math materials of undergraduate degrees. Second, most computer experts and staff of accounting firms need to learn it. Third, a student must have enough background in discrete math if he want to compete in math competitions. Also, most problems in discrete math can be solved with a few tactics. Finally, he maintains that materials of discrete math are more interesting than other approaches. In conclusion, a student must learn some important parts of discrete math if he want to study in science departments.

In the ARI J.'S article " Is Gold Really the Safest investment?", she states that why the price of gold increasing and gold is not the safest investment in the world. First, we can know what the relation between dollars and gold is. Second, there is the reason why the gold price increasing in the whole world. Third, the price of gold or the value of gold is unpredictable and volatile. To sum up, the suggestion is that we should not be blind buying gold or selling your jewelry.

REACTION:
I agree with the author's opinion that gold is not the safest investment, because the price of gold is unpredictable. But is a little safer than dollars, especially when the world is in trouble whit financial crisis. I think that is the best way to keep the value of your money is by using all 50% of your money to buy gold and keeping the other 50% of money in the bank. Whatever which side is changed, you always have 50% of the money, and get a chance to earn more money.

Dollarization, Economic Growth, and Employment

Nelson Carrasco
Summary
Core Class
Monday, March 30th, 2009.

In Raimundo Soto´ paper “Dollarization, Economic Growth, and Employment” (*), the author established the effect on employment levels and economic growth, and the relationship between them, after the Government from Ecuador made the decision to eliminate the national currency and use American Dollar in its place. First, he introduces a brief point about the economic situation of Ecuador before and after dollarization. Second, he describes the Econometric Model used to analyze data, which consisted of a multivariable Log-linearizing equation of regression. Then, the author explains the main discoveries when he ran the model for the long and short term, which are high and positive correlations between employment levels and both the Gross Domestic Product and Real Exchanges Rate; on the other hand, the opposite effect was found for the Cost of Capital and Real Wages. He concluded by saying that the dollarization process of Ecuador has been controversial, because it has coexisted with two different effects, and said that in order to increase the employment levels the government will make policies which help the economic growth and avoid fixing a high minimum salary.

At home, we can play with them in different ways. Such as, drawing pictures and talking about it, reading stories which talk about something similar with what they feel and express our emotions to let them know that we are suffering from something but we will feel better when we talk. Other wise, we can visit a professional psychologist to help our kids.

Summary:
Danny Shaw’s article entitled “Crime statistics reveal little” alleges that the statistic, which shows that in England and Wales a crime happens once per 5 seconds, an arrest occurs once per 15 seconds, can’t tell us the truth. The author points out a big mistake. Although the data was provided from the government, the data can’t use the snapshots directly. Except that they are just a record of one day, no other information can be known. Even though the amount events of wrongdoing, seizing, probation service and Victim Support seemed large, some numbers of them should be cut out, like the shots leading to transfer from one department to another one, cautions and acquittals. We have to know the details for the events, or deeply know how many police staff deal with the events. All factors should be considered for the analysis. So actually the statistics could only be used to promote them for working hard and how large their tasks are, nothing else. The best revised way is using the average daily caseload per year to stand for the snapshots on May 01. That will make the statistics more reliable.

TOEFL

To help me pass the TOEFL test I think I need to improve my reading skills and grammar skills more than anything else because of many reasons: TOEFL has many reading parts and it includes grammar, so if I get more practice, I will answer most of them and improve my score. My listening skill is better than the others. I think I need to read more about different topics to increase my vocabulary, grammar and reading.

Person should prepare for TOEFEL test before taking it for long time, should go to TOEFEL class, make practice for the skills, read a lot and study grammar. The night before the test, she should sleep early and relax. In the morning, he /she should wake up early, and eat a good breakfast: If you like to drink coffee, should rat a cup before starting the test. During the test they should be relaxed, confident, listen carefully and be careful when they answer. Believe that what you will get is still a good try.

TOEFL

Q: What skills do you need to pass the TOEFL? We know that you need listening skill, grammar skill, reading skill, in general, but What else? What are parts of those major sections that are most difficult?
A: I think that TOEFL asks for many skills. For instance, saving time, prioritizing, concentration, etc. These are very important things.Particulary,we don't need blanks. We have to check every question. While we are solving a question,if we face a difficult question,we had better skip the question. In my case, leading part is the most difficult.
Q: How should a person best prepare for the TOEFLL? Give them advice about sleep, food, wakefulness, exercise, coffee,or whatever you think is appropriate. How should a person feel on the morning or afternoon of the test?
A: To pass the TOEFL is little difficult. So,we need some kinds of effort.First of all, We have to listen to English through TV,radio, and other audio.Next, we should get accustomed to writing in English. For instance,we had better write a diary in English everyday. Finally, we had better take the exam as a real situation. If we did the above things,we will get a higher score. In my case, I want to take the test in the afternoon beacause I can concentrate in the afternoon.

toefl

The most i want to improve is listening skill. I have a lot of troubles to improve my listening. When i watch the video or shows, i can almost know what they said. But when i practice Toefl exerices, i only can undrstand half the meaning of sentence. I don't know how to improve my toefl listening. So, do you have some good idea to make my toefl listening progress more?

I think that enough sleep is very important for preparing the Toefl. If you do not have enough sleep, you will be tired and your brain will be not clear to take the exam. Then, you need to eat enough food as the normal level, because it takes you a long tme to take the toefl exam. At last, i think tests in the afternoon are better than tests in the morning, because we have enough time to prepare exam and adjust our mood.

Dan Dong

HOW SHOULD YOU BE PREPARED FOR TOEFL

There are many ways for a person to be prepared for the TOEFL test. The ways that we can improve our performance are: sleep, exercise, practice strategy and being motivated. First, it is necessary to have a good sleeping situation such as sleeping on time at some hour in a good place and environment, because it makes you feel good in a good mood and surge of energy next days. Second, exercise any kind of sport at least 30 minutes 3 times per week. For example simple and easy exercise should be running, swimming, meditation, moreover, aerobic exercise should be good. We may include walking and using stairs I our daily life. Third, we have to practice strategies learned in TOEFL class because it helps us to solve difficulties faced on the test, lets us take less time and do better. Finally, motivation is another important factor that improves our performance. All these are ways to get better results on the TOEFL test.

WHAT SKILLS YOU NEED TO PASS THE TOELF

WHAT SKILLS YOU NEED TO PASS THE TOELF

TOELF is one of the tests in the English language that test our ability and fluency in English . Normally, TOELF requires speed, reflection, precision and coherency at some time. Consequently, I think, all these items much be in combination in order to finish the test on time. Time is critical for everybody . My suggestion is that improving speed on the reading comprehension is a key to success. All in all, I need to improve reading and grammar skill because I believe them to be the key of TOELF score success.

TOEFL - quick write

Most difficult section in TOEFL

When I take a TOEFL exam, I run out of time on the reading part. It is impossible to read everything. I need skills to figure out sentences, and to know which part is important and which one is not. I have to find out for answer the question, because reading is long and time is short.

Prepare for the TOEFL

Of course, we should study our weak point. When we study TOEFL exam, we should check the time. It is important to adjust to the real TOEFL exam. After practice, we were not chased by time.

TOEFL

What skills do you need ot pass the TOEFL? We know that you need listening skill, grammar skill, and reading skill, in general, but what else? but what else? What are parts of those major sections that are most difficult?

Before studying foreign language, I think we also have to study our own language, because It's also a language. I don't think our foreign skills will increase even if our own language is not developed yet. Speaking is also important. Actually when people know how to speak it means that they already know much about grammar, reading and listening. TOEFL is an exam, so when we don't know the answers; we need a kind of luck. reading is the most difficult part for me to do it, because I don't know much about vocabulary, and I hardly practice reading parts.

How should a person best prepare for the TOEFL? Give them advice about sleep, food, wakefulness, exercise, coffee, or whatever you think is appropriate. How should a person feel on the morning of afternoon of the test?

Some people didn't get much sleep because of studying, but it's not a good idea. Sitting in a chair for a long time doesn't mean studying hard. We need concentration when we study, so we need enough sleep. Exercising a few times a week is good for our health. When our body is healthy, we can do a lot of things for a short time. I don't think coffee is good, because coffee has some materials that cause sleep disability, and it bothers our thinking clearly. I don't recommend drinking coffee when you are studying. I've read from books that said morning time is the best time to do something when it required concentration.

Hellene

TOFEL

What skills do you need to pass the TOEFL? We know that you need listening skill, grammar skill, and reading skill, in genera, but what else? What are parts of those major sections that are most difficult?

During the TOEFL, listening is the most difficult parts of every international students. The second language has different pronunciation; the local dialects are very fast, so it is not easy to listen. For the reading parts, the time is too short, and there are lots of readings, so we need to read as quick as possible. Using the lest time understand the meaning and finish many readings; however, we can't do that.

How should a person best prepare for the TOEFL? Give them advice about sleep, food, wakefulness, exercise, coffee, or whatever you think is appropriate. How should a person feel on the morning or afternoon of the test?

Afternoon for the test is the best time. We can wake up later, have enough time to sleep, so that during the test we don't feel sleepy. Maybe take coffee and drink it at the test. Before the test, we will eat some food, not too much, and don't feel full is good for the students who will do the test. In the test, relax yourself that you will get the best scores.

Quick write by Maiko

To get higher score, we need to have skills without knowledge. First, concentration skill is one of the most important skills. In my case, when I feel tired or do not have strong motivation, I couldn't get higher score, but when I have higher motivation and have enough rest, I tend to be able to concentrate and get a higher score. Also, It is necessary to have controlling skill. People ned to control themselves to prepare for TOEFL and make themselves be ready for the test. In addition, I think grammar section is the most difficult because I don't remember grammar and I used to hate grammar before I came to America.

To get higher score on the TOEFL test, people should go to bed early and get enough sleep before the exam. To get enough sleep, it is good to exercise the evening before. Also, they should not drink coffee before going to bed. They can drink green tea to reduce stress level. In the morning, they should be full of challenge spirit to get higher score, instead of be nervous.

TOEFL

I think i need the gift of learning another language. We know that we need listening skill, grammar skill, and reading skill. Also, we need speaking skill. Maybe it is not important for the sections of TOEFL. But by the speaking skill, you can practice all of the sections in TOEFL. Also, I think the most difficult part is reading. There are many different kinds of knowledge in the reading part and many vocabulary. So i think the reading part is most difficult.

We need a long time to prepare for the TOEFL, because it is really difficult for the second language speaker. But do not be so nervous about the test. Keeping you body healthy is the most important thing. You should sleep on time and wake-up on time. Eat some healthy food, do not always eat fast food. You can do some excise to keep you body strong. But do not do a lot of excise, you will be too tired to study. One day before the test, do not do any excise of TOEFL. You just need to relax, watch a movie or do something else. I f your TOEFL test is in the morning, remember to eat breakfast. If your TOEFL test is in the afternoon, make sure that you don not feel sleepy during the test.

Journal Question #6

For some of you this is your last CESL term. You are about to leave CESL and head out into the University, maybe to SIU or somewhere else. Now I am asking your to think about you best memory of CESL. What was something that happened to you while you were at CESL that was very memorable for you? Why was it so good? God forbid that you haven't had a good time at CESL, but if you cannot think of a good moment but can only think of a bad one, please tell me that too. Do not mention anyone's name. Please post any pictures you have that relate to this!
If you don't want to talk about CESL, but your time here in Carbondale or in other parts of the US that you visited to, was it anything like you expected? What did you learn from your time here? What would you do again?
As long as your answer has something to do with this topic I'll love it. Also....PICTURES!! Please? (e-mail some to me at ana_lightcap86@yahoo.com If you do, I'll love you forever...and you'll be forever immortalized in the CESL Today!)

DUE 3/2 at 5PM. 10 SENTENCES.

Last Question of the Term....enjoy it!!!

Journal Question #5

Hello All!! (Sorry this question is up a little late but I know none of you really do them until after Friday, so I think it's ok).
I just came back from Chicago because I had an interview for the JET program. If I get the job I'll be helping to teach English in Japan this coming July. I was a little nervous because I have wanted to travel my whole life. Though, I don't think that I was the most nervous that I have even been before.
This week I want to ask you what was a time in your life that you remember being very nervous or anxious about. It can be an exciting event, like getting to do something that you have always wanted to (an interview for a good job etc...), or it could be before something very negative, like having to do something you don't want to (give a speech or something like that.)
If you have a picture, awesome! If not, that's sad...

REMEMBER: 20 SENTENCES (I count the periods!!!!) Due 2/23 at 5pm!!!!

Thanks!!

Journal Question #3

This next Saturday is Valentine's Day. As far as I know I think all of your countries celebrate this holiday, though I know that each our your cultures celebrate this holiday differently. If you don't know this holiday, it's simple to understand. This is a day for Lovers. It's on this day that you tell the person you love most all about it. Also, sometimes people give gifts to their family and friends.
My question for this week asks about the kind of person you would want to marry. What do you want them to be like? What personality or what kind appearance?
If you are blessed enough to be married now please tell me about this person. How did you meet them? What are they like? What are you going to do for them this weekend?
If this question is a little too personal for you, tell me past experiences with this holiday in your country. How did you celebrate this day as a child?
DUE 2/16 at 5 PM. 10 Sentences.

(Also, I will be out of town this next Monday so I'll be getting your grades back to you a little late!!)

Americans

Hey all!!! After reading many of your journal #2s I was really impressed. I learned a lot of new things, and then heard some things that I had to learn about the hard way after meeting many international students. On my personal page I wrote my own reaction. It is my opinion and should not be taken as a personal attack to anyone in particular.I love internationals, but this is something I have wanted to say to foreign students here, and to people I have met when I left my country, but never was able to say. Read it if you are interested. I couldn't pass up the chance to do the same thing that you all did.

I ask that you do this by DEC 1st!!!! The sooner you send me things the better. would like to have this done for your classmates that will be returning home this semester.
JOURNAL QUESTION:
We all have something in our lives that remind us of happy memories. There are many things that I enjoy for that reason, one of those being puns. Puns are jokes that are made by playing with words. An example is “To write with a broken pencil is pointless.” These kind of really bad jokes remind me of my Grandpa! Whenever I hear one I think of him. What kinds of things are precious to you?

Journal #5

Sorry I put this up late. I'll take it on Tuesday but I'll give a point extra credit if you turn it in by the normal time! Thanks!!!

I have always heard that in some cultures people who spend time by themselves are considered strange. I am the kind of person who needs some time by myself. I love to be around people, but to really relax and not die of stress I need to spend time alone. During that time I like to sleep, read a book, take a walk, sleep, write or some other activity that puts me at ease. What do you think of alone time? Do you need it or is it something strange to you?

Journal Questions #4

People tend to think that fears and dreams are really different things, but sometimes the things that we fear the most are things that might get in the way of our dreams by making them impossible. My dream is to travel. Ever since I was a child I have wanted to see the world. I have been able to travel out of the country 3 times in my life, once to England and twice to Japan. I was so excited every time, actually I cried tears of joy the moment I saw Japan for the first time from the air! I used to have to many fears about traveling. That would not have money, that I would not be able to make close friendships with anyone outside of my culture. Now that I’ve made many friends from outside of my culture I am excited to be able to travel more in the future! Maybe one day I will have the pleasure of visiting your country too!

What are your dreams and aspirations for the future? What kinds of fears do you have that relate to this? Or do you not have any fears? Why not?

Due 11/10 at 5pm!! 10 sentences required.

Journal Question #3

This next week many Americans will celebrate ‘Halloween,’ a day dealing with the dead. This is a holiday that was once created in respect of the dead, but now is primarily a time for people to dress up in costumes, get candy and share scary stories. In your culture, do you have a holiday around this time of the year? Is this holiday similar to Halloween? If yes, how is it? If no, do you have a holiday that concerns the dead?

I personally don't celebrate the holiday but I do like to have some fun with my friends.

Narrow the academic language gap to reduce the achievement gap

Ally

Summary

In O’Donovan’s (2007) article, “Narrow the Academic Language Gap to Reduce the Achievement Gap,” the author mentions why teachers have to teach their students academic language and how teachers can teach their students new vocabulary successfully. First, the author states that the knowledge of academic language is very important to be successful in their school and jobs. If they know a lot of vocabulary, they can get an achievement in their speaking and writing. Next, the author explains the methods of teaching the words in class. Also, he gives us an example of the lesson that is designed by useful words. After that he mentions the rules of the specific word directions and how teachers can select the word lists. Finally, the author comments that all student need to use the academic vocabulary in their writing.

Reaction

Maybe, most EAP1 students in CESL should have been experienced learning the vocabulary in class. Especially, in my class, we choose the words that we don’t know when we start the new chapter. Then, the teacher writes the words that we choose on the board. After that, we try to select the essential vocabulary that is useful to know in many situations. Then, we pronounce the words, repeat after teacher and guess the meaning in texts. Sometimes we explain words to a partner or group members. We are given the definition of words by a teacher. It is difficult to use academic words in speaking and writing. Also, we are not familiar with using the academic words. But, if we could know lots of academic words, it might be very useful to understand the articles. However, just to remember the words is not a good way to improve English because our power of remembering might be limited. So, the teacher offers us opportunity to use several words in writing. It is very useful to remember the words and to know how to use the words in the texts. Especially, English learners like me have to try to use the academic words. In the classroom there are a lot of way to teach and learn but one of the important things is that we must develop using academic words.

A new phenomenon: sleep lines on the face

Masha

Summary

According the article “A new phenomenon: sleep lines on the face” describes the aetiology of sleep lines on the face and also, other wrinkles due to other reasons such as aging and ultraviolet radiation are mentioned here. Langer.K did the first wide study of skin lines of tension, therefore, the lines are called “Langer’s lines”. Furthermore, the skin lines as “sleep creases” could appear on the face and were related to the superficial musculoaponeurotic system. There are three cases of different wrinkles from the typical horizontal and vertical skin lines on the faces, especially the forehead. In all these cases, three men’s lines were unilateral and bilateral oblique wrinkles and these lines arose from sleeping prone, with their faces buried in the pillow. These men’s lines were compared with each other because they were the same age, sex, status, and had the same sleeping position in common, however, their socio-economic groups were different. In addition, this article includes a discussion about lines on the face. There have been many proposed physiological bases for skin lines, but aging and exposure to sunlight being more important bases then others. The changing of skin with aging and the number of wrinkles increases frown and crow’s lines. However, sleeping lines are not related to aging, they are caused by physical habit. Finally, we can reduce the sleeping lines by changing the sleeping position, but we can not stop the wrinkles of aging.

21st-Century Dentistry

Maged Basharahil

Reference: Shulman Matthew. (Feb 25, 2008), 21st-Century Dentistry. US & World Report. Retrived (June 04, 2008),from www.ebscohost.com.

Summary:

The article “21st-Century Dentistry” shows us some of new findings in Dentistry. The author explains three novel methods used in dental clinics. The advanced findings reduced pain, treatment and healing time. The author mentions the laser-assisted new attachment procedure, or LANAP, mini-implants, and digital impression technology. The LANAP can treat infected gums without using scalpels. It killed the bacteria and infected tissue by color distinguishing, helps reform the surrounding tissue, and less reinfection happen. Also, the laser heat seals gums and creates a physical barrier to bacteria. Also, it is used in reshaping gummy smiles in cosmetic clinics. The second advanced technology is Mini-implants. In fact, this kind of implants help the limited jaw bone patients to wear dentures. Also, it does not require scalpels, it is cheaper than conventional implants and can be inserted in one visit. At last, digital impression technology, that is used instead of traditional paste impression used in restorative treatment. It is more comfortable for patients, has less waiting time, and gives the patients more options to select color and type of restorative materials.

Reaction:

First of all, this article definitely interests me. Although, I am a dentist, I found new information in “21-st Century Dentistry”. For example, I am really happy to hear about Mini-implants finding. It will end the aging problem because in the past, we could not do implants of patients with limited bone in their jaws. These new findings helps the patients as well as the dentists. Also, digital impression helps the patients who suffer from gag reflex. In other words, some patients feel nausea and vomiting while impression taking. But, with the digital impression will finish this problem. Finally, I hope the scientists keep discovering new results.

The Same People

ZhiChu Huang

Reference
Quindlen, Anna, (2008, June, 09th), The Same People, retrieved June, 06th, 2008 from Newsweek, 70.

Summary

According “The same people” (2008), the author discusses what the effect caused by gay-married in the modern society. One of the author’s sons cannot forget what the two boys did at the dinner table. They are not like author’s friends in high school because they made friends with gay. First, one of the most obvious changes of our lives is about the fight of gay rights. The great success has made them to break tradition with a simple answer, because “We are all the same people,” Ellen DeGeeners has said to John McCain. The CSC (California Supreme Court) also said the rules and rights of gays should be based on equality. Someone said that gay marriage is just a thing without following any normal rules. From the Roman poem in the second century it can be found that women should get married with men. Then, in order to find a way to keep the importance of different-sex marriage, some people want to get the support and find out ignored factors from laws against gay marriage.

Gay men and lesbians usually suffer to avoid the public. Their life styles are similar to the hetero marriage, but they cannot get enough rights as same as normal couples. So, without legal support and help, same-sex couples have to trend to depend on the people who do not care about them. Then, the author has a question about why we cannot accept many kinds of love around the world. If the same-sex couples can love and honor each other forever, so we should afford them and give them acceptance and support. The gay-marriage will be told about all around the world, and the younger people will easily find who is gay, and also easy to support them to get married. Maybe someday people will treat gay-marriage as a product of history, as the voting rights of women and black-white marriage.

Reaction

From this article, the opinions about gay-marriage begin to change to normal with the acceptance by more and more young people and organizations. The gay-marriage or gay-couples are hard to see in my country, but when I have been to America, I have seen gay-couples many times, even kissing in public.

At first, my opinions were the same as those people who do not accept the same-sex love. A large number of people think “Most men love women, and men should love women, so men love men are unordinary.” I never believed love will happen between the same sexes and even getting married. It never occurred to me and my friends and that is really such an abnormal thing to me. But after looking at them many times, I think they are not some strangers. Wearing, eating, studying, playing, most of them are the same as normal couples, beside their relationships.

Sigmund Freud has said everyone in the society has the tendency of bisexual, so the percentage to be the people who tend to be bisexual maybe the all people in society, that means 100%. Although I do not totally believe this opinion, I am not negative about the rights gotten by gays. From schools, barracks, monasteries, prisons gays are usually be found. Their becoming to gay may be affected by the society, so they should be seen as a normal part of society and get the same rights as other so-called normal couples.

With the development of society, gays are not seen as a mental disease as before, and are treated as a normal relationship. From to legalizing the gay-marriage and adopting their own children in some states or countries, many people can correctly treat the relationship between the same sexes. Now, in my opinion, couples or marriage depends on two people and whether they love each other, instead of have to base on male and female.

Summary

In Joseph G. Murphy and Marian T. McEvoy article "Revealing Medical Errors to Your Patients." The authors discuss how those medical errors can happen by professional physician. There are three common errors, over dose of anesthesia, which cause death, informing the patient what's happened to him by mistake, and mixing the name of patient with her husband in the patient's record. The patients must get all there ethical rights whether for personal autonomy and dignity or for the outcome of wrong treatment. Most of the studies show the patients were not informed about their medical errors. Also, the patients want to know full information even though cannot understand. On the other hand many states in the US recently did not accept the medical apology laws that protect physician against liability. It is clear to inform patients when the errors are harmful, but if it is near miss and they already fixed it, so, that unnecessary to be known. New studies show most of medical errors came from slight. Many physicians want to tell the patient every thing because recently anyone can get all information from medical internet websites. Recently, we can see decreasing in the number of errors or at least remaining it in the same level after the financial compensation. Patients and their families may be dismayed at the outset, in fact they accept the apology, and would like to know if the doctors learn about their mistakes.

Reaction

Medical errors are a significant threat to the lives of patients today. We have found a lot of medical errors come through negligence. We can't ignore newspapers which talked about some doctors who forgot some their stuff in the abdomen of the patient such as towels or even a clipper?? The social status created by the community which appears the doctors as over critic does not mean condoning the errors. Physician like ordinary employee all of them must be hold when they defaults. Somebody could argue that this may affect the work where the doctor may feel uncomfortable with the promise of self-confidence .We can understand that, but we must put some regulations to protect the patient's lives. Some of government like Saudi Arabia have some rules to keep those mistakes under control. One solution proposed is a comprehensive medical insurance, but for this discussion there is another place.
